One of the main critiques that the British had of Indian society and
one of their main excuses for taking over India was that the Indians were backward and barbaric. The British pointed to such practices as widow-burning and child marriage as a reason for managing Indian society. Can you tell me a bit more about some of these practices? To what extent did they actually take place and how did the British react to them and use them for their own purposes?
