Discussion 2 – Week 3 COLLAPSE

Strategies for Successful Paraphrasing

This Discussion has you practicing paraphrasing with a larger sample of writing. You are also going to share strategies for successful paraphrasing and avoiding plagiarizing with your fellow scholar-practitioners.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Read the original passage below, from Richard A. Posner in The little book of plagiarism, Pantheon Books, New York published in 2007 (page 81).
For this Discussion you are to paraphrase Posner and include one direct quotation. Refer to the the APA Manual for using quotes and proper citing. Make sure to include the reference for Posner.
  • Discussing plagiarism detection Posner (2007) offers this explanation.
“Student plagiarism may be becoming less common as more and more colleges and universities adopt plagiarism-detection software, such as Turnitin, a product of a company named iParadigms. Thousands of colleges both in the United States and abroad have acquired licenses, at an annual cost of about 80 cents per enrolled student, to use the program. The program digitizes each student’s paper, uploads it into the Turnitin database, and searches the database for matches. The Turnitin database is actually a collection of databases. One, the equivalent of Google’s database, is a complete and continuously updated copy of the World Wide Web. Others contain archived materials from the Web, contents of other publicly available databases-and all the student papers that have been submitted to Turnitin for a plagiarism check’ (p.81).
Posner, R. A. (2007). The little book of plagiarism. New York: Pantheon.
