ENG106 Week 1 Discussion 1 & 2 Latest 2017 August

dq 1
In the argument chapter, you learned aboutexpressed arguments (overt arguments
attempting to persuade the audience towards a point of view) andimplied arguments (arguments that
appear on the surface not to be arguments but actually seek to persuade the
audience of a point of view or views). For this DQ, provide a specific example
from the media of an expressed argumentand an
implied argument and answer the following questions:

  • What
is the expressed argument you identified? What specific argument does the
author make? What evidence does the author use to support his or her
    claims?
  • What
is the implied argument you identified? What specific argument does the
author make? What evidence does the author use to support his or her
    claims?
  • Why
is it important to understand expressed and implied arguments?
  • How
might you use your understanding of expressed and implied arguments when
drafting your first essay in this course?

Note: You may use visual arguments such as
photos and pictures, but you will still need to explain your rationale for why
you believe the author is making a specific argument.
Be sure to cite all sources used to compose
your answer. Format your in-text citations and reference list entry according
to GCU Style.
dq 2
Please review the following video Writing
Process about writing introductory paragraphs and thesis statements, with
particular focus on Section One: Organizing the College Essay. Note: This link
works best in the Google Chrome browser.
For the first essay, you will be writing a
definition essay about a term related to organ sales or donations. Please share
your current thesis statement for your definition essay. Here is a sample
thesis statement for the definition essay:
Organ sales in the United States would be
unethical because they exploit the poor, favor the rich, and create an unfair
or black market organ lottery.
During the week, respond to your classmates
with constructive feedback about their thesis statements. You may consider
revising your own thesis statement after receiving feedback from your peers.

Read “Legalizing the Organ Trade?” by Ritter,
located on the Time website (copy and paste the link into the URL).
http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1833858,00.html
As noted in Peter Ritter’s (2008), “Legalizing
the Organ Trade?”, Singapore’s health minister, Khaw Boon Wan, argued that, “We
may be able to find an acceptable way to allow a meaningful compensation for
some living, unrelated kidney donors, without breaching ethical principles or
hurting the sensitivities of others” (para. 2). In the definition essay assignment,
you are asked to select a term, define the term, and offer evidence to support
your definition of the term.
In this case, imagine you have selected the
termmeaningful compensation to
define. You might ask yourself: What constitutes meaningful compensation for an
organ donor, especially if the donor is poor and the recipient is wealthy? What
examples of human organ sales can I find that match or do not match your
definition of meaningful compensation? What other terms related to organ sales
and donation would be suitable for an argument of definition?
dq 2
In the Aristotelian or Classical Framework for
argument, a writer might target an audience of readers that is undecided or
neutral about the main claim (thesis statement) of the essay. A section is
placed directly before the conclusion for acknowledging opposing viewpoints.
Then the writer chooses to concede or refute that view.
Why does the writer not want to spend much
time on an opposing viewpoint? Why mention that viewpoint at all? How might a
concession help or hinder the main claim of the essay (the thesis)? What are
some opposing viewpoints you might include in your definition essay?

Recall your readings in Topic 1 regarding
human organ donation and sales. In the article, “Kidney Shortage Inspires
A Radical Idea: Organ Sales,”
https://lopes.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://search.proquest.com.lopes.idm.oclc.org/docview/399092881?accountid=7374
Dr. Francis Delmonico believes that even a regulated
human organ trade would be exploitative because “it’s the poor person who
sells” (Meckler, 2007). Answer the following questions:

  • Do
you agree that allowing a poor person to sell an organ is an exploitative
    practice? Why or why not?
  • What
documented examples from real-life organ donors can you provide to help
you demonstrate how a regulated human organ trade would (or would not) be
    exploitative?
  • If
you were writing your definition essay on the termexploitative, how would
    you define it?

You may revisit the Human Organ Donation and
Sale Resource List from Topic 1 for resources. Be sure to cite all sources used
to compose your answer. Format your in-text citations and reference list entry
according to GCU Style.
dq 2
Chapter 2 of the textbook discusses two scenarios in which evidence may not
meet some audience’s expectations. In the first scenario, two scientific
studies are in conflict with each other In the second scenario, a child
psychiatrist uses stories from his patients rather than statistics as evidence.
Each case poses a problem regarding the use of evidence: We sometimes have
difficulty reconciling conflicting pieces of evidence, and we are reluctant to
see stories, rather than statistics, as valid evidence. In the essay that you
are writing right now, what kinds of evidence have you found? In what way might
it meet an audience’s expectations? Name the audience, discuss how it may
meet–or not meet–the audience’s expectations, and explain why. Later in the
week, compare your observations about evidence with those of your classmates.

Week 4 Discussion 1 & 2 Latest 2017 August

dq 1
To help you prepare for your Cause and Effect
essay on donating or selling organs, brainstorm general topics of interest and
conduct an online inquiry as to possible causes and effects.
For example, you might have an interest on the
effect of social media on children younger than thirteen years of age. You
research young children in their tweens and discover that these individuals are
more readily exposed to online interactive groups, such as Facebook, Twitter,
or Web pages themed to attract a younger audience; this creates a root cause
with the effect of having a large social network of friends.
This result becomes a new cause that leads to
the effect of stronger Web-based communication skills, which leads to intuitive
and up-to-date technology skills. This result leads to overuse of or possible
Internet obsession, which results in decreased participation of afterschool
activities, such as sports or music groups. This result leads to lack of focus
on homework and a significant drop in academic performance, which results in
poor quality of student work. The result is repeating the same grade level.
Now, create your own cause-effect chain based
on your online inquiry. Make sure the cause-effect chain is logical, plausible,
and realistic.
Be sure to cite all sources used to compose
your answer. Format your in-text citations and reference list entry according
to GCU Style.
dq 2
We are continuing to work towards our Cause
and Effect essay on donating or selling organs. Watch the local news or go
online and read news as presented through CNN, Google, or MSN News. Choose a
current story or news event of interest. Create a list of causes for the story
or event. Discuss at least three “whys” (the causes) that led to the event and
three projected plausible results (the effects) from the event. Your reply
should discuss a total of three causes and three effects. Support each cause
and result with an explanation.
Be sure to cite all sources used to compose
your answer. Format your in-text citations and reference list entry according
to GCU Style.

Week 5 Discussion 1 & 2 Latest 2017 August

dq 1
As you have learned from this week’s readings,
a cause-effect chain argues that one thing leads to another (e.g., “Increasing
levels of acidity in sea water are harming the oceans’ coral reefs.”). A causal
cause and effect chain links causal claims together as links in a chain.
Remember your argument is only as strong as the weakest link in your chain.
Summarize the causal cause and effect chain
used by the writer in the article fromThe New
York Times
. Was the argument persuasive? Why or why not?
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/29/world/europe/black-market-for-body-parts-spreads-in-europe.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

  • What
has caused the growth of the legal sale of human organs in some countries,
a concept unthinkable 100 years ago?
  • What
has caused the growth of selling human organs on the black market?
  • What
are the causes you have identified and will write about in your draft?
  • What
are the effects you have identified and will write about in your draft?

dq 2
There is common wisdom that states,
“Correlation is not causation.” Explain in your own words what this phrase
means. Now, read the current draft of your cause and effect essay. Consider how
you might revise your essay in light of this saying. Describe what revisions
you might need to make to your essay to ensure that your argument is logical,
plausible, and realistic and does not present an argument that is illogical,
far-reaching, or unrealistic.

ENG106 Week 6 Discussion 1 & 2 Latest 2017 August

dq 1
Use the following questions to develop ideas
for your proposal.

  • What
do you think is the most significant problem regarding the sale of organs?
  • Why
do you think it is a problem?
  • Who
has the power to solve this problem?
  • Why
has it not been solved up to this point?
  • How
    can the problem be solved?
  • What
are the benefits and costs related to your solution?

Using strategies for argumentation discussed
previously in class, develop some arguments for your proposal that you could
use for your skeptical audience. Refer to Chapter 7 in the textbook for
additional information on rebuttals.
dq 2
To whom will you address your proposal? This person (or group)
will be skeptical of your views. Will it be a friend or family member with
different beliefs and values related to health care and/or the human body? Are
there individuals in the medical community who hold different values than you
do? How about a politician or media figure?
What are their views on the issue of selling
human organs, and what do they think should be done about it? Summarize the
views of your skeptical audience as fairly and accurately as possible.
During the week, review your classmates’
summaries of their skeptical audiences’ views. Constructively offer feedback on
their summaries. Were the summaries fair, or did they seem biased? How can you
tell? Offer suggestions on how to revise their summaries.
GC
ENG106 Week 7 Discussion 1 & 2 Latest 2017 August

dq 1
Four important steps when composing a proposal include (1) convincing the
audience that there is a problem that needs to be solved, (2) explaining what
you want your audience to do about the problem, (3) acknowledging opposing
viewpoints or steps to solving the problem and (4) justifying the action you
are asking your audience to take. What strategies will you use for each step?
What will make your content for each of these steps effective? Later in the
week, review answers that your classmates have provided and provide feedback on
their ideas.
dq 2
Many people have either engaged in an argument
that seemed unresolvable or witnessed such an argument between friends and
family members. Consider one of these arguments you have either experienced or
witnessed, and then identify the fallacies that were expressed during this
discussion or argument. Note how the fallacies prevented the discussion from
being resolved. What did you learn about fallacies from this experience that
you can apply to your proposal essay? How might fallacies like these be avoided
in proposal writing?

Draft Latest 2017 August

Definition ArgumentEssay Assignment
Goal
Write a1,500-1,750-word
essay
 usingfive
to seven academic resources
in which you argue that a
contested“case” involving
the sale, trade, or donation of human organs fits (or does not fit) within a
given category.A case may
include a specific news article, story, or incident illustrating a dilemma or
controversy relating to the exchange of human organs. The case does
not need to be a court case.
Directions
Follow these steps when composing your essay:
1. Start by selecting a controversial case found in the media
involving the sale, trade, or donation of human organs. For example, an
appropriate case might include a story in the news about an organ broker, and
the term to define might be “criminal.
2. Decide what category you think your case belongs in, with the
understanding that others may disagree with you about the definition of your
category, and/or whether your chosen case matches your category.
3. In the opening of your essay, introduce the case you will
examine and pose your definition question. Donotsimply
summarize here. Instead, introduce the issue and offer context.
4. To support your argument, define the boundaries of your
category (criteria) by using a commonly used definition or by developing your
own extended definition.Defining
your boundaries
simply means naming the criteria by which you
will discuss your chosen case involving the sale, trade, or donation of human
organs. If you determine, for example, that an organ broker is a criminal, what
criteria constitute this? A criminal may intentionally harm others, which could
be one of your criteria.
5. In the second part of your argument (the match), show how
your case meets (or does not meet) your definition criteria. Perhaps by
comparing or sizing up your controversial case to other cases can help you to
develop your argument.
This essay isNOT simply
apersuasive essayon
the sale, trade, or donation ofhuman organs. It is an argumentative essay where
the writer explains what a term means and uses a specific case to explore the
meaning of that term in depth.

Week 3 Entrepreneur
Interview Paper

Locate a local entrepreneur to interview and write a
reflection paper on your chosen person. You are required to submit a one-page
biography of your entrepreneur in Week 3 that is worth 20 points. It is
important: Be sure to start this assignment as soon as possible to insure that
you find a suitable entrepreneur.
The purpose of this paper is to interview a local
entrepreneur in order to develop insights into the world of entrepreneurship.
At the end of the process, you will need to take the information and reflect
upon the challenges and the rewards of being an entrepreneur.
What type of person becomes this type of risk taker?
What challenges did he or she face and overcome?
What failures did this person have?
How many companies has he or she started?
How successful is he or she?
Why is this person successful?
Why did he or she become an entrepreneur?
What is this person’s measure of success?
What did you learn about entrepreneurship from this
interview?
This paper should focus on these types of questions but
should not be limited to just the ones listed above. Get creative and get into
the idea that you need to learn from this person so that you can better
understand the challenges this business choice offers.
Guidelines
The biography paper must be no more than one page; you will
turn this into the dropbox at the end of Week 3.
You must follow APA formatting guidelines.
Although this is not a scientific-type writing assignment
and is mostly creative in nature, references are still very important. You must
reference your interviewee. Be sure to look up how to cite an interview in APA
style.
All DeVry University policies are in effect, including the
plagiarism policy.
Any questions about this paper may be discussed in the
weekly Q & A discussion topic.
Milestones
During Weeks 1 through 3, select a person and conduct an
interview. Decide who you are going to interview for the project, make
arrangements for the interview, and conduct the interview.
In Week 3, submit an entrepreneur biography. In Week 3, you
are required to submit a one-page biography in the dropbox.

Even though this is not a scientific-type writing assignment
and is mostly creative in nature, references are still very important. You must
reference your interviewee. Be sure to look up how to cite an interview in APA
style.
All DeVry University policies are in effect including the
plagiarism policy.
Papers are due during Week 5 of this course and should be
submitted to the dropbox.
Any questions about this paper may be discussed in the
weekly Q & A discussion topic.
This paper is worth 150 total points and will be graded on
quality of research topic, quality of paper information, use of citations,
grammar, and sentence structure.
Milestones
During Week 5, write and submit your entrepreneur reflection
paper. In Week 5, you will finish writing your paper (see next section). For
APA format guidelines, please refer to the APA Tutorial in the Syllabus. Insure
that the body of your paper, excluding cover page and sources, exceeds the
minimum and that all of the assignment requirements have been met.
Best Practices
Cover Page: Include who you prepared the paper for, who
prepared it, and the date.
Table of Contents: List the main ideas and section of your
paper and the pages where they are located. The illustrations should be
included separately.
Introduction: Use a header on your paper. It will indicate
that you are introducing your paper.
The purpose of an introduction or opening is to
introduce the subject and why the subject is important;
preview the main ideas and the order in which they will be
covered; and
establish the tone of the document.
Include in the introduction a reason for the audience to
read the paper. Also, include an overview of what you are going to cover in
your paper and the importance of the material. (This should include or
introduce the questions you are asked to answer on each assignment.)
Body of Your Report: Use a header titled with the name of
your project (e.g., “The Development of Hotel X – A World Class Resort”). Then
proceed to break out the main ideas: state the main ideas, state major points
in each idea, and provide evidence. Break out each main idea you will use in
the body of your paper. Show some type of division such as separate sections
that are labeled, separate group of paragraphs, or headers. You would include
the information you found during your research and investigation.
Summary and Conclusion: Summarizing is similar to
paraphrasing, but summarizing presents the gist of the material in fewer words
than the original. An effective summary identifies the main ideas and major
support points from the body of your report; minor details are left out. Summarize
the benefits of the ideas and how they affect the tourism industry.
Work Cited: Use the citation format as specified in the
Syllabus.
Week 7 research paper

You will write an extensive research paper on an
entrepreneurship failure. As you may be aware, 80% of all small businesses fail
within the first five years (50% in the first year). Your research paper must
answer the following question: Why does this failure happen, and how can it be
avoided? You will need to research a small business or use your entrepreneur
that you interviewed to learn about failure. The paper will have three
sections.
Failure Introduction: Your first 2 pages should be a
background of the failed business. What was the business? Who were their
competitors? What was their mission or business vision? When did the business
start and then fail?
Reason for Failure: This section (2 pages) requires your
insights and will be a large part of your grade. You must describe why the
business failed. There are many reasons small companies fail, and you should do
some basic research (hint – some scholarly research is required here) to
determine the common causes and then compare this research to your company.
Your Analysis: The last section (2 pages) should be what
could have been done, in your opinion and based on the knowledge you received
in class (another hint – more scholarly research could be used here), to avert
the failure. Could the entrepreneur have planned better? Was the idea sound but
the implementation poor? Simply put, as the observer after the fact, how could
this business have survived?
It is important: Do not write 5 pages on the company and
save the last page for the reason and analysis. Please use the guidelines above
to ensure that you maximize your effort on this project.
Remember, the point of this research project is for you to
evaluate a failure, determine the causes of the failure, and introduce a way
the failure could have been averted. This project will give you some insight
for your own potential business idea and help you avoid some of the mistakes
others have made. As stated above, failure is common in small business; conduct
some solid research on this project to identify the risks, so you can create
mitigation techniques to increase your chances of success when you venture out
with your plan!
Guidelines
Papers must be 6 – 8 pages in length. (There would be
roughly one page per area included in the report.)
You must follow APA formatting guidelines. Appropriate
citations are required.
Include a table of contents.
Even though this is not a scientific-type writing assignment
and is mostly creative in nature, references are still very important. You must
have at least 4 scholarly references. (For more information, please view
research information below.)
All DeVry University policies are in effect including the
plagiarism policy.
Papers are due Week 7.
Any questions about this paper may be discussed in the
weekly Q & A discussion topic.
This paper is worth 200 total points and will be graded on
quality of research topic, quality of paper information, use of citations,
grammar, and sentence structure.
Research Information
Note that you will conduct online research using scholarly
resources, which can be found in the DeVry Online Library (available under
Course Home) and online research sources such as Google. Locate at least 4
scholarly articles that discuss the failures in small business for inclusion as
sources in your paper. What are current trends in this business (or in the
overall industry of which this business is a member) that might impact customer
service, customer satisfaction, or customer loyalty positively or negatively?
Milestones
In Weeks 1 through 3 you determined the failure you will
research and decided what business failure you planned to research.
In Weeks 3 through 5, you researched and analyzed failure.
During Weeks 6 and 7, write and submit your entrepreneur
reflection paper. Finish writing your paper. For APA format guidance, please
refer to the APA Tutorial in the syllabus. Ensure that the body of your paper,
excluding cover page and sources, exceeds the minimum page requirement, and
that all of the assignment requirements have been met. Then, submit your paper.
Best Practices
Cover Page: Include who you prepared the paper for, who
prepared it, and the date.

Question

Week
1 discussion

Ethics and Emotions in
Business
The discussion board for
this course will cover some fundamental ethical principles that are commonly
discussed in ethics courses. You will be asked to apply these concepts to a
business setting after reviewing an interactive learning tutorial and/or
listening to the same materials discussed in an audio format.
In this module I would
like you to consider the relationship between ethics and feelings as discussed
in the tutorial and podcast materials provided on the background readings page.
After reviewing these materials, identify an ethical issue that you encountered
in a business setting and discuss this in terms of how the scenario impacted
you emotionally and how it might be considered from the position of
intuitionism (or based on other concepts presented in the tutorial).
In each discussion forum,
students are expected to respond to the prompt by providing an informed,
rigorous, and professional post. The initial post should be at least 150 or
more words. In addition, students are required to respond at least 2 times to
their classmates’ posts in a similarly informed, rigorous, and professional
manner. Peer replies should be at least 100 or more words in order to qualify
as substantive. Refer to the discussion rubric for more details.
Week 2 discussion
Utilitarian Theory
In this module we will be
discussing the concept of utilitarianism. After reviewing the presentation from
Pearson Learning Solutions and/or the podcast in the background materials,
consider an ethical issue that occurred in a business setting that might be
examined using utilitarian ethical principles and assess the situation from a
utilitarian perspective. Comment on the usefulness and some of the problems
with this approach in relation to evaluating situations from an ethical
position.
Week 3 discussion
Freewill and
Determinism
After reviewing the
Pearson Learning materials in the background page of this module, respond to
the following:
Viktor Frankl (1905–1995)
once said: “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing; the last of
the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances,
to choose one’s own way.” Dr. Viktor Frankl was a Jewish Austrian
neurologist and psychologist who survived the concentration camps during World
War II. Frankl had his opinion on human freedom. Respond to the following
questions:
Explain whether you agree
with Frankl’s opinion that it is important for a person to have the freedom to
choose one’s attitude in a given set of circumstances and to choose one’s own
way.
Describe a personal
example in a business setting that supports your explanation. For instance, you
might want to discuss how people deal with edicts from on high in a given
organization vs. situations where employees have a voice in the decision making
process.
To what extent you
believe that freedom or the right to choose is important from an ethical
perspective and how does this choice impact business success?
In each discussion forum,
students are expected to respond to the prompt by providing an informed,
rigorous, and professional post. The initial post should be at least 150 or
more words. In addition, students are required to respond at least 2 times to
their classmates’ posts in a similarly informed, rigorous, and professional
manner. Peer replies should be at least 100 or more words in order to qualify
as substantive. Refer to the discussion rubric for more details.
Week 4 discussion
Social Contract
Theory
After reviewing the
tutorial and/or podcast in the background section, discuss social contract
theory and apply social contract theory to a business situation you are
familiar with. To what extent does SCT help to explain differences in ethics
and ethical perspectives in a culturally diverse setting?
What is the efficacy of
SCT in describing issues related to business ethics?
In each discussion forum,
students are expected to respond to the prompt by providing an informed,
rigorous, and professional post. The initial post should be at least 150 or
more words. In addition, students are required to respond at least 2 times to
their classmates’ posts in a similarly informed, rigorous, and professional
manner. Peer replies should be at least 100 or more words in order to qualify
as substantive. Refer to the discussion rubric for more details.
Week 4 reflective discussion
Business Ethics
In this course you have
been exposed to a number of issues that involve ethical consideration. Please
take some time to reflect some of the issues you have been asked to contemplate
over the past four modules. How will you apply these concepts to your life/job
in the future?
Module 1 – Case
THE HISTORY OF BUSINESS
ETHICS AND STAKEHOLDER THEORY IN AMERICA
Assignment Overview
The first part of your
reading in Daniel Terris’ book will include an overview of Lockheed Martin’s
organization and will lay out the research plan that Terris used to obtain
information necessary for his work. This will be followed by a general overview
of the evolution of business ethics in America.
Case Assignment
Based on your readings,
describe what you consider to be the responsibility of top leadership in a
large organization with respect to reaching a balance between profits and
stakeholder concerns. Please support
your position by giving some examples from the text or from other sources where
CEOs did a good or poor job of finding this balance.
Terris discusses the
history of business ethics in America since the late 1800s with respect to
anti-competitive practices, seeking unfair advantage through immoral
arrangements with suppliers and public officials, failing to adhere to laws and
regulations, and lack of transparency.
Discuss to what extent you believe things to be better or worse in the
present day for businesses in general.
Describe welfare capitalism
and its role as a forerunner of the contemporary business ethics movement.
On page 41, Terris
discusses the ideas of Howard Bowen regarding the evolution of social
responsibility of businesses. To what
extent do you think his predictions held true since 1953?
Assignment Expectations
Your paper should be
double-spaced and in 12-point type size.
Your paper should have a
separate cover page and a separate reference page containing the full citations
corresponding to the in-text citations you choose to use in the body of your
paper. So in addition to the 4- to 5-page body of your paper you will have a
title page and a reference page. So overall, you will be submitting a 6- to
7-page document.
Use APA style, and
proofread your paper.
Upload your paper by the
end of the module.
Module 1 – SLP
THE HISTORY OF BUSINESS
ETHICS AND STAKEHOLDER THEORY IN AMERICA
Business Ethics and
Stakeholder Management
For your SLP this session
you will be asked to review articles on business ethics from the Trident Online
Library. You will review one or more articles each in Modules 1 through 4
dealing with different ethical concepts.
In this SLP we will be
reviewing articles that cover the concept of stakeholder management.
Stakeholders are important to consider in significant business related
decisions. This is because organizational decisions – especially substantial
decisions involving significant resource allocations/re-allocations – tend to
impact various stakeholder groups as you will be reminded in your reading.
These stakeholders may have the power to impact the organization’s success.
Assignment Instructions:
In this assignment you
will be asked to apply stakeholder management theory to the following scenario:
A public corporation of
980 employees manufactures a popular brand of garments (mostly jeans) that are
primarily made and sold in America nation-wide. It has a large contingent of
employees in several small rural communities in the Eastern US and is the primary
employer in all of those communities. Two if its 5 shops are unionized but the
union and management have a good working relationship. The company has
traditionally marketed its clothing line as “Made in the USA” and attracted a
bit of a “cult like” following as a result, but an outside consulting firm has
suggested that significantly greater profits are possible if a different
strategy is employed. The corporation is subsequently considering whether to
off-shore its manufacturing facilities to a poor nation to save money on labor.
It would also discretely discontinue its “Made in the USA” marketing ads and
hopefully ride the wave of its previous marketing campaigns for a while. It is
estimated that total cost per unit of production will be decreased by one third
which equates to tens of millions of dollars.
Please write a 3-page
paper in which you respond to the following:
1. Provide a paragraph
summarizing the concept of stakeholder management based on your readings.
2. How do you think the
following stakeholder groups in the above scenario will be impacted?
Employees/unions
Communities
Stockholders
3. What would you
recommend the employer described above should do?
SLP Assignment
Expectations
Your 3 (or more) page
paper should be double-spaced and in 12-point type.
Your paper should have a
separate cover page and if you are using any in-text citations then a separate
reference page.
Use APA style, and
proofread your paper.
Upload your paper by the
end of the module.

Module 2 – Case
ETHICAL DECISION MAKING
IN DIFFICULT SITUATIONS
Assignment Overview
Moving Toward an Ethical
Workplace
As you can see from your
reading for the case assignment Lockheed Martin has a very interesting history
and this history has had an impact on where the company is today with respect
to its existing ethics program.
Case Assignment
After reading Chapter 2
of the text, please write a 4-5 page essay that addresses the following:
Lockheed has an
interesting history that seemed innocent enough up until around the 1950s.
You’ll note on p. 56 of Terris’ book that the company began to engage in some
questionable sales strategies with other nations in an effort sell the F-104
Starfighter so as to recoup costs when their US sales strategy failed.
Describe some of the unorthodox
strategies covered by Terris during this era that made Lockheed become “…a
byword for the shady practices of American multi-national corporations, and a
major impetus for new legislation....
On the issue of overseas
bribes, Terris asks the questions, “Who was hurt by the [overseas bribes
to secure sales of aircraft]? The competitors, of course, but what was
unethical about beating out the competition that was playing by the same
rules?” (p.59). What do you think about a situation where underhanded and back
door deals are the way the game is played if everybody is on the same playing
field? That is to say, if everybody is playing by the same shady rules, is it
unethical to compete?
In your reading you will
note that defense contractors continued to find themselves in hot water well
into the 1970s as a result of overpricing and additional charges of bribery. In
the late 70s Lockheed established its first code of ethics and later the major
defense contractors came to the table to level the playing field with the
Defense Industry Initiative (DII), by agreeing on a set of ethical principles.
This was an important turning point as was bringing Norman Augustine on board.
Why was the DII so
important to the eventual success of Lockheed Martin’s ethics program?
Discuss Norman
Augustine’s and Dilbert’s contribution in helping Lockheed Martin turn the
corner with its ethics program.
Assignment Expectations
Your paper should be 4 to
5 pages, should be double-spaced and in 12-point type size.
Your paper should have a
separate cover page and a separate reference page. Make sure you cite your
sources.
Use APA style, and
proofread your paper.
Upload your paper to by
the end of the module.
Module 2 – SLP
ETHICAL DECISION MAKING
IN DIFFICULT SITUATIONS
Ethical Decisions in the
Workplace
After reading your
background readings, please review the following scenario and address the
questions at the end.
Jerry Stevens heads up an
excavation crew for the municipal utilities district in a city in Nebraska. A
sewer line needs to be replaced and it has been excavated with a back-hoe. The
trench is 7 feet deep. The municipality’s safety rules indicate that employees
should not go into the trench without a trench box. This rule is to prevent
employees from being buried if the trench walls collapse. People die every year
from trench cave-ins.
The trench box won’t
arrive on site for another 6 hours and the city promised residents that the
sewer would be fixed by the end of the day, which now seems impossible. The
City Administrator called Jerry on his cell phone and indicated that it was
imperative that the sewer be fixed as soon as conceivably possible because a
City Council member is served by that sewer line and will raise a fuss if it’s
not fixed by the promised time.
One of the more
experienced workers states, “It’s only going to take 30 minutes to dig
under the pipe and loosen the fittings. We don’t need the trench box. We used
to do this all the time before we were required to use one of those darn things.
Jerry knows he’s right.
He used to do it himself before the rule was put in place. Also, the soil is
clearly a cohesive soil and it’s highly unlikely that it will collapse. And
although there is an organizational policy to use a trench box for trenches deeper
than 5 feet, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) does not
have
Jurisdiction over
municipalities in Nebraska because municipalities are political subdivisions of
the State. The only entity regulating safety policies is the City’s Safety
Director and he took the day off.
In this scenario, to what
extent do you think allowing the crew into the trench without a trench box
would be pushing (or exceeding) the limit?
Discuss any ethical grey
areas in this scenario?
What in your mind is the
right thing to do?
What is the value of
having an ethics program (and related programs like safety programs) and what
are the responsibilities of front line leaders/supervisors and the workers when
they face dilemmas such as the one described?
SLP Assignment
Expectations
Please take some time to
review the materials and take a position on the issue. Write a 2- to 3-page
assessment of the authors’ claims, and your assessment of what might be done in
a place of business to prevent the “moral amnesia” phenomenon from
taking a foothold in a place of business.
Your paper should be
double-spaced and in 12-point type size.
Your paper should have a
separate cover page and a separate reference page. Make sure you cite your sources.
Use APA style, and proofread
your paper.
Upload your paper by the
end of the module.
Module 3 – Case
BUILDING AN ETHICS-BASED
WORKPLACE CULTURE
Assignment Overview
Ethics Program
Implementation
As you can see by your
reading, a lot of energy goes into the implementation of an organizational
ethics program. And Lockheed Martin has clearly allotted considerable resources
to assuring their program is successful. In this assignment we’ll be focusing
on what the company did to ensure the implementation of a successful program
that was flexible enough to accommodate the changing needs of the organization.
Case Assignment
Please address the
following questions:
On p. 83 Terris discusses
the company’s ethics code. Why is the
code considered important to the company’s ethics program?
Discuss the importance of
ethics training and employee involvement.
What are some of the things Lockheed does to make the training process
interesting and worthwhile?
How does Lockheed measure
success with respect to ethics in the workplace?
What are some of the
things Lockheed does at the operational level to make their ethics program
work?
Assignment Expectations
Write a 4- to 5-page
paper, not including title page or references page addressing the issue and
upload it by the end of this module.
Your paper should be
double-spaced and in 12-point type size.
Your paper should have a
separate cover page and a separate reference page. Make sure you cite your sources.
Use APA style, and
proofread your paper.
Upload your paper by the
end of the module.
Module 3 – SLP
BUILDING AN ETHICS-BASED
WORKPLACE CULTURE
The Chief Ethics Officer
Assignment Overview
In this assignment you
will be asked to consider the role of organizational leaders with respect to
ensuring companies work to create an ethical workplace culture. It is important for all upper level leaders
to ‘walk the talk’ so to speak. In
addition, many larger companies have a Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer who
provides leadership and oversight to the company’s business ethics related
endeavors. Recall that Lockheed Martin has such an executive level position.
However, not all companies have such a position. In this assignment you will be
asked to discuss the contributions of executive leaders and of the Ethics
Officer with respect to building an organization that values workplace ethics.
What do you believe are
the most important characteristics of ethical leadership?
Describe the relationship
between the ethical leader and the follower.
Why is this relationship
important for organizations that are attempting to do the right thing?
Based on your readings
(both the articles provided and Terris’ text), what is the role of the Chief
Ethics Officer and how does the role of this person relate to the success of
the ethics related endeavors within large organizations?
SLP Assignment
Expectations
Your paper should be 3–4
pages, double-spaced and in 12-point type size.
Your paper should have a
separate cover page and a separate reference page. Make sure you cite your sources.
Use APA style, and
proofread your paper.
Upload your paper to by
the end of the module.
Module 4 – Case
ORGANIZATIONAL ETHICS AND
CSR
Assignment Overview
A Critique of Lockheed
Martin
In this assignment you
will be asked to review Chapter 4, the final chapter of Terris’ book, and to
spend some time applying your critical thinking skills in evaluating Lockheed
Martin’s efforts.
Case Assignment
What do you think about
the notion presented by Terris that Lockheed’s ethics program does little to
prevent ethical breaches at the highest level of the organization?
Are the efforts put
forth—such as making sure higher level executives participate in
training—enough to help executives navigate what Terris calls the ‘ethical
minefield’ faced by leadership in such an organization?
What are some things that
could be done to address the issue related to ethics at higher executive levels
of the organization?
Terris points out that
the company’s program is overly focused on individuals and that it doesn’t
really address group dynamics that can impact ethical situations. For instance,
there can be a tendency for groups to ‘go with the flow’ of the group decision
making process and overlook ethical issues in the process. What would you
recommend that Lockheed Martin do to address this situation?
(Hint: reviewing p. 128
and the following pages – before section headed “Personal Responsibility,
Collective Innocence” – of the text might be helpful).
Assignment Expectations
Write a 4- to 5-page paper,
not including title page or references page addressing the issue and upload it
by the end of this module.
Your paper should be
double-spaced and in 12-point type size.
Your paper should have a
separate cover page and a separate reference page. Make sure you cite your sources.
Use APA style, and
proofread your paper.
Upload your paper by the
end of the module.

responsibility.
Describe corporate social
irresponsibility.
Where do you stand on the
issue of CSR v CSI? Do corporations have a right to ignore their responsibility
to some stakeholders in order to add to the short term bottom line? Provide a
well-reasoned response and do some of your own research to provide some
examples to support your arguments.

Case Study
For this assignment, review the Nike case study, located at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5uYCWVfuPQ.
Click here view the video transcript.
Once you have viewed the case scenario, respond to the following questions, with thorough explanations and well-supported rationale.
These workers state the “only thing they have is their work”. This statement suggests that without this work, they would have a lower standard of living. Should we inflict western values on this society? Bring in the concepts of social responsibility, integrity and other business ethics practices.
