This is the scenario:

Max is overweight and does not
engage in any regular exercise. His doctor has recommended that he increase physical activity, but he prefers video games and playing on his mobile device.
I would like some feedback on this:
I believe in this case using a negative reinforcement would benefit Max. “In negative reinforcement, a behavior is strengthened by the removal, or a decrease in the intensity, of a stimulus.” (Chance 2014). Taking the negative reinforcement away, in this case the video games and his cell phone, would encourage him to exercise more. Essentially this means that in order to increase certain behavior (exercise) you have to remove something that is hindering him from doing it. I actually have experience in this exact same thing, my son was spending too much time on his x-box and I took it away to be used only for four hours total on the weekends and he became much more active and engaged in exercise more. “Remember, however, that negative reinforcement involves the removal of a negative condition to strengthen a behavior.” (Chance 2014) Because negative reinforcement is a reinforcement strategy, there aren’t any real worries with implementing it.
